Q&A with Stephanie Lanier: Loving People Well, Managing Emotions, and Perspective

Stephanie Lanear is the leader of Lanier Property Group, which is an award-winning real estate team in Wilmington, North Carolina. She also founded The Inspiration Lab, a membership community that provides teaching, tools, and connection for working women and is a parent to a child with special needs.

With all of that (and more!) in her life, she definitely knows a thing or two about work-life rhythm and integration. One of my favorite takeaways from our conversation was focusing on loving people in the way they want to be loved. By doing that, you’ll never fail to make them feel special. She always asks people what their favorite (candy, animal, color, etc.) is so that she can better choose gifts or small thoughtful gestures for them.

We hear all the time, “Follow the Golden Rule and treat others how you want to be treated!” when in reality it should be: Treat others the way they want to be treated. Ever heard of the 5 Love Languages? If you haven’t, take the quiz! It’s quick, easy, and so applicable to all sorts of things in life. If you have, you probably know exactly what I mean!

And her last advice for making others feel important is to practice compartmentalizing so that if you are with another person, you’re able to be 100% there with them and present in conversation. That, to her, makes all the difference in the long run.

With so much heaviness coming from the uncertainty of her special-needs son, she also has wise advice like:

  • Avoiding highly emotional topics at bedtime, because the conversations aren’t productive and they usually negatively affect sleep quality
  • Not being afraid to reach out for professional help from a counselor that you feel comfortable with
  • Knowing when you need to just take an extra minute in your car to cry and then, afterwards, collect yourself and put your best foot forward

Stephanie was a joy to interview and truly has accomplished so many incredible things. Enjoy her episode and learn even more from her!
