Habit-Hacking with The Lulubuck System

The lulubuck system I created is a great way to build good habits by focusing on the valuable reward of making simple efforts in favor of sustainable habits. In this article, we’ll explore how the lulubuck system helped me, and how you can implement similar systems in your daily life to achieve your goals effectively. 

I’ll tell you a small secret: I love Lululemon Leggings. I LOVE them.

I’ve never been a big shopper, but once I tried on a pair of their running leggings I knew I could never go back to something else.

Eventually, I had this idea to earn my Lululemon Leggings. One leggings cost a lot, I know. 

So, I invented the “Lulu Jar.” When I do a specific habit, I earn one “lulu buck” (or basically $1) into the jar and each dollar earned in my jar goes towards a future pair of Lululemon leggings. 

I made sure to share note in my phone that my husband, Drew, has access to just to make sure I strike the perfect balance between achievable and challenging when I set up my small list of habits to work on.

WHAT IS A LULUBUCK SYSTEM?

The “Lulubuck” system is something I use to build habits in a sustainable way. It’s a system that has helped me both to form good habits and also to break bad ones. This system is based on the idea of taking small, incremental steps towards developing a habit that are positively reinforced by as you do them. 

HOW TO USE THE LULUBUCK SYSTEM AND WHY IT WORKS:

A couple of years ago, I decided I wanted to change some of my small, daily habits to in order to make myself more productive, successful, healthy, and thriving. 

One of my first habits was to read for at least 20 minutes. I knew reading was good for me, but I absolutely dreaded it and never picked up a book. I started by setting a timer for 20 minutes and forcing myself to read on the couch. At first, I really did dislike it, but that all changed when I felt the satisfaction of finishing my first book. Each time I read for 20 minutes, I also experienced the small positive reinforcement of what I was doing by earning a buck towards a future trip to Lululemon.

If I fast forward to now, I can tell you that I honestly love reading and can’t get enough. I’ve learned so much from the amazing books I’ve flown through and even find myself wishing I had more time to read! I love it! The small boost of motivation each lulubuck gave me provided just enough of a kickstart to eventually develop into the solid habit that I am now so thankful for!

This system works because it is a way of reinforcing a positive behavior. The idea is that if you are incentivized to work toward a goal, you’ll be more likely to meet it.

Even if you don’t incorporate a lulubuck habit-building system like I have, we can all at least enjoy the good reminder that reward is importance.

This system works to build good habits, because we are rewarding ourselves for things that otherwise would be ignored, seen as trivial, and not applauded as something to be proud of.

Similarly, it is really well recognized in most literature and research that people would rather have more recognition than more money in most cases. In other words, most of us would rather get the reward of “great job!” and some form of positive feedback than a raise.
